Operation Dalesman
Operation Dalesman Event Report 2010
A huge and heartfelt `thank you' is given to all who have supported Dalesman through its 3 year `life' - 2008 to 2010. In particular the
re-enactors -both military and 1940's civilians who have helped set the scene, made offers of help and volunteered real hand-on help
over the weekends. Thank you so much - without you things just wouldn't have happened.
We must pay tribute to the `people' of Leyburn who provided a tremendous effort in welcoming public and re-enactors alike, helping to
extend the event from just the immediate environs of the railway.. It was such a wonderful effort. In addition, our thanks for their
welcome and tolerance during those times we `invaded' the town.
There is an addition; a special appreciation to the Methodist Church where, for the first time in over 20 years or so of existence Combined
Operations have been able to hold our church parade in an actual `Church'. Also, for their support and helping hand in allowing us to put
`our stamp' on the way we were permitted to dedicate the service - very important to our group as Remembrance has always been a strong
part of our ethos. - `Lest We Forget'.
However, we must end on a particularly disappointing finale to this report. The Wensleydale Railway PLC has withdrawn its financial support
to `Operation Dalesman'. In their view the event, despite most people's opinion, did not justify the railways support for the continuance of
the event. Combined Operations Sheffield, after three years of ongoing development work have, therefore, been `kicked in touch' without
discussion.
So, for those of you planning their 2011 attendance, I'm afraid Dalesman has `gone' and the weekend is empty.
Once again our grateful thanks
Do watch our website because as things develop we will try to keep our friends duly informed. Such a sorry end to our efforts.
Once again our grateful thanks
Robbie
Alan Roberts, C.O. Combined Operations.
