D-Day Anniversary
63rd Anniversary of the Normandy D-Day Landings
Programme of events.
Monday 4th June2009
Caen Memorial, from 6-8pm, Veterans of all different nationalities will participate in the commemoration of Operation Overlord and the Battle of Normandy.
Tuesday 5th June
Ranville, 3:30pm, Ceremony of the Royal British Legion at the British cemetery; 4:30pm, Ceremony at the Crépuscule de la musique militaire, in front of the salle des fêtes; 5:45pm, Tribute to the French commandos and laying of a bouquet of flowers at the British cemetery.
Vierville, Saint-Laurent, Colleville, from 2pm to 4pm, Gathering of French and American pupils and American veterans on Omaha Beach; 6pm at Sully cemetery, Tribute to the soldiers of the Allied Forces.
Longues, In the evening, as part of the D-Day festival, festive evening at the site of the Batteries, 9:30pm (free entry)
Merville, from 5:30pm at the site of the Battery, Commemorative ceremony followed by opening ceremony for the new museum area of the Battery
Wednesday 6th June
Colleville-sur-Mer, 10 :30am, Ceremony at the cemetery (open to the public). 200 pupils from Langrune, Sainte-Croix-la-Grande, Trévières and Chicago will be invited. The opening ceremony for the Visitor Center in presence of the American Defense secretary is on invitation only (600 people)
Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer, 9am, Saluting the flags and laying of flowers at the `Signal' monument; 3:30pm, National commemorative ceremony of the Comité du Débarquement (Landings committee) at the 'Signal' monument, march of the troups
Caen, Various commemorative ceremonies throughout the morning
Ver-sur-Mer, 9:15am, 11:15am, 11:45am, Ceremonies at the Memorial and laying of flowers
Arromanches, 10am, Opening ceremony for the primary school `Raymond-Triboulet'; 11am, Outdoor service on the place du 6 juin; 12am, same place, Official ceremony and laying of flowers; 3pm, Historical military vehicle parade; 6pm, Procession of English veterans; 11pm, Musical firework display; 11:30pm, Open air film
Bayeux, 10:30am, Memorial service in the cathedral led by the Royal British Legion; Afternoon, Religious ceremony at the British cemetery
Cirqueville-en-Bessin, 3pm, Commemorative ceremony at the Pointe du Hoc
Mézidon-Canon, `Normandy Day' street dinner from 6:30 pm, rue Diderot
Isigny-sur-Mer, Giant `Normandy Day' picnic and concert (with Matthieu Johann) from 7pm in the parc de l'hôtel de ville
Asnelles, 9:30am, Tribute to Maurice Schumann at the new cemetery; 11am, Ceremony at the British monument; 12 noon, Tribute to the first Assault Group of the Royal Marines (Rescue Post)
Ranville, 9:30am, Veterans reception; 10am, Religious office; 11am, Memorial service at the British ceremony; 9pm, `What news - from D-Day to today', musical performance at the salle des fêtes from the Caen university choir sponsored by the Comité du Débarquement (Landings committee)
Thursday 7th June
Bayeux, 11am, Commemorative ceremony of the Liberation of the town at the musée de la Bataille (part of the D-Day festival); NightEvening opening of the Musée de la Bataille from 6pm-9pm followed by a concert in front of the museum
Port-en-Bessin, 10am, Opening ceremong of the memorial garden
Friday 8th June
Asnelles, Liberation Concert `L'air du temps - Eté 44', 9pm, Concert at the Essex
Saturday 9th June
Bayeux, Picnic and dance in the gardens of the Hôtel du Doyen, from 7pm to mark the closure of the D-Day Festival
